Ottawa’s Preston Street developed its Italian-Canadian identity well before the 1950s, when the bulk of Italian immigration began. More importantly, in direct counterpoint to what some believe, the area has maintained and consolidated its identity in a process of settlement and redevelopment that gives it energy, strength, and authentic character.
