Swordfish

I met a fisherman at the port of Riposto near Catania, a fisherman who was preparing to work the catch. In all the Italian maritime cities and especially in the Sicilian ones you can still find the strong bond between man and the sea that has its origins in the mists of time. In this shot I wanted to capture one of the oldest Italian crafts in all its brutal beauty.

“Swordfish” won First Prize in the 8th Accenti Magazine Photo Contest, and was displayed at the Accenti Magazine Awards during the Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival in May 2015.

Francesco Licandro was born in Catania. He turned to photography in 2011 after years of interest in painting. He loves photographing people in religious and social contexts. He has participated in several competitions and exhibitions, receiving national awards, and has collaborated on the book U iancu e u niuru, published in 2011.
