Through a sequence of short stories, poems and creative non-fiction pieces, Rosetta Rosati recounts her family history spanning three generations in Italy and Canada. What can be described as an odyssey begins with the family patriarch, Giacomo Talarico, leaving his hometown of Cicala, Calabria, in the early part of the twentieth century. “Determined to escape poverty, he had been attracted by the immigrant’s dream which ignited hearts with courage and hope for a better life in a new world. Nevertheless, he was aware that his journey would not be free of hardships, tears and solitude. After many days of travel from his hometown to the city of Naples, the vessel SS Luisiana had appeared as a gentle giant. It would take him to New York harbour and thrust him into paradise. Its magnificence and incredible height had so impressed young Giacomo that it made him forget the anguish and homesickness he had suffered during the long journey that had taken him to the harbour. Montreal, which he had indicated as his final destination, now seemed around the corner – no longer unreachable.”
