“Afternoon in Volterra’ was taken during siesta in the thickest heat of the day on a trip to Italy in June 2008. I was wandering the piazza looking for interesting compositions and saw this group of men sitting against an ancient stone wall, cooling off in the shade. I could tell they had known each other for a lifetime from where I stood across the square. They were relaxing but still conversing intensely in the animated way that Italians have been known to talk. I couldn’t resist.” – Monica Lisi Lacey
“Afternoon in Volterra” won Second Prize in the Accenti Magazine Photo Contest and was displayed at the Accenti Magazine Awards during the 11th Blue Metropolis Montreal International Literary Festival in April 2009.
Monica Lisi Lacey is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer from Prince Edward Island. She was given her first camera at the age of eight by her Italian father, also a photographer. She loves working in black and white, and enjoys combining her photography with other mixed media in her work. Monica travels to Tuscany to visit her family as often as possible and is consistently inspired there by the soft slanted light and the passion for life that is distinctly Italian.
